Quinlan Tom '89 is a shareholder at McInerney & Dillon’s Oakland office. He lives in Lafayette with his wife, Kris Kessler, and their sons, Zachary (10) and Nathaniel (8).

Joy Cartun '89 , as part of the legal team at Symantec, supports the Norton brand consumer products and services business and manages litigation and marketing support. She and her husband, Ari, have four daughters, all of whom are in college—a graduate student at UCLA; a sophomore at UC Santa Cruz; a freshman at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo; and a freshman at Lewis and Clark College in Portland.

Chandler Rand Williams '89 lives in San Diego and works for Cubic Defense Applications.

Sharon Meieran '89 , an emergency medicine physician, lives in Portland with her husband, Fred, and two children, Ella (6) and Benjamin (3). She writes, “My law background is coming in handy, as I’m involved in health advocacy. I look forward to catching up with my classmates at our 20th reunion!”

Claudia Gorham '89 is a partner and cochair of the Eminent Domain Department at Meyers Nave Riback Silver & Wilson in Oakland, which represents public entities throughout California, Nevada, and Arizona. She lives in Alameda with her daughter, Marcella (12), and is involved with the Women Lawyers of Alameda County, Earl Warren Inns of Court, and the International Right of Way Association.

McGregor Scott '89 , after nearly six years as the U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of California, is a partner in the white collar
defense and corporate investigations practice group of Orrick’s Sacramento office. He and his wife, Jennifer, live in El Dorado Hills with their three sons—ages 10, 7, and 4—and participate in their school and sports activities.

Christopher Aguilar '89 is the CEO for a broker-dealer named Institutional Cash Distributors, based in San Francisco. “My wife, Regina, and I have two children—our daughter, Amalia, is finishing her freshman year at Bishop O’Dowd High School, where she plays soccer, and our son, Zachary (2 ½), is a big hockey fan,” says Christopher. “We live on Yerba Buena Island. I am also cochairing the 20th reunion committee.”

Paul Tourangeau '89 is the director of the Air Pollution Control Division for the State of Colorado, responsible for all aspects of air quality in the state. Previously, he was general counsel of Environment, Health and Safety for Duke Energy Corporation, a national, integrated energy company. Paul lives in Denver with his wife, Kristen, and their two daughters, Perrin (15) and Eva (13).

Mary Bridget Neumayr '89 is a counsel to the Committee on Energy and Commerce in the U.S. House of Representatives, where she works on energy and environmental matters. She previously served as deputy general counsel for Environment and Nuclear Programs at the U.S. Department of Energy.

Silvia Argueta '89 serves as the executive director of the Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles.

lives in San Diego and is working at Booz Allen Hamilton in the contracts department to support the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command in Acquisitions and Operations for Tactical Communications.

John Stevens '89

graduated from the National War College in June with a masters in national security studies. He will return to the Department of State in the fall to work on nuclear nonproliferation issues.

Heidi Maretz '89

and husband, Peter '89, are sending the first of their four children off to college in August. Their son, Matt, will attend Syracuse University where he was accepted into their highly competitive acting BFA program. Heidi and Peter celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary in December.

Steven Cooper '89

Janice Weis '88 is the associate dean of the Environmental and Natural Resources Law Program at Lewis & Clark Law School in Portland, where she is launching climate change and energy initiatives. She and her husband, Bryan Powell, have two daughters, Devyn and Jenna.

Brian Bertonneau '88 as executive vice president with the Insurance Advocacy Group, works in the areas of client development and business operations.

Marianne Smith Johnson '88 had her poetry published in Lavanderia: A Mixed Load of Women, Wash and Word and Sport Literate and is forthcoming in Calyx. Marianne practices law in San Diego.

Todd Thompson '88 is celebrating his 20th anniversary with the civil litigation firm of Mair Mair Spade & Thompson, on the Pacific island of Guam. “Last year, I helped organize President Obama’s caucus campaign in the U.S. territory,” says Todd.

Gloria Fangon-Hitz '88 is a real estate broker and principal at UrbanSpace Real Estate Services in Oakland (www.urbanspaceco.com). The company is expanding its services to include the exhibition, leasing and sales of American and European modern and contemporary art. The UrbanSpace Gallery launch party is Oct 1, 5:30-8:30 p.m. at 811 Washington Street, Oakland. The inaugural exhibition features 24 artists and will run through December 31.

Jeffrey Judd '88

opened Judd Law Group, which focuses on complex litigation involving real property, the environment, business practices and products. Prior to opening Judd Law Group, Jeffrey was a partner with the firms O’Melveny & Myers and Howrey.

Wayne Gross '88 is a litigation shareholder in Greenberg Traurig's Orange County office, where his practice focuses on complex civil litigation, class action defense, trademark infringement cases, and white-collar criminal defense. He previously was a partner at Snell & Wilmer and chief of the Orange County Division of the Office of the United States Attorney.

Brian Condon '88 was named president of the Los Angeles County Bar Foundation, the charitable arm of the Los Angeles County Bar Association. A partner in Arnold & Porter’s Los Angeles office, Brian has served on the Foundation’s board for the past 10 years.

Gregory Abrams '88 is a partner with Pacific West Law Group.

Matthew Coe '88 left Hyatt Hotels in 2008. He says, "I am living in Barcelona and establishing a business and legal advisory firm with a focus on hotel development in Europe and Latin America."

Sheryl Traum '88

obtained a Non-Suit in a multi-million dollar mold / real estate non-disclosure case after a four-week trial. She joined the firm of Lorber Greenfield & Polito in October, continuing her specialty in high value real estate and construction-related matters.

Ellen Schned '88

is Senior Vice President Distribution at Ovation, the only television network dedicated to art and contemporary culture. She leads the network's distribution efforts and strategy, as well as the upcoming launch of its high-definition channel and expansion of its video on demand and local video on demand services. Ellen joins Ovation from CBS College Sports, where she was Senior Vice President of Affiliate Marketing and Distribution for four years. Prior to that, she was Senior Vice President of Affiliate Sales and Marketing for Court TV.

Susan Kaye '88

is pleased to announce the 15th anniversary of the opening of her own law practice, now known as Kaye-Moser-Hierbaum, a boutique family law, estate planning, and trusts and estates firm in San Francisco. Even more importantly, 2010 finds Susan to be the proud new owner of a weekend home in the Sonoma wine country. She says, "I encourage everyone to come by for a swim and a barbecue after an arduous day of wine tasting in either Sonoma or Napa."

Rick Franceschini '88

is a partner with Ragghianti Freitas in San Rafael, and is a certified tax specialist. Rick says, "Seven of the 11 attorneys in my firm are Hastings alumni, and we even have a new lawyer joining us in the fall who is a 2010 graduate!"

Mary Merz '88

runs her own firm, Merz & Associates, focusing on intellectual property. She lives Chicago with her husband, Scott, and their three daughters, Isabelle, Stephanie and Jacqueline.

Maria Bondonno '88

says, "I'm practicing regulatory law for the California Public Utilities Commission, mostly in the area of consumer advocacy. I have a new love and she's a horse--she's bringing sexy back!"

Garee Gasperian '88

has determined to focus his practice to helping the elderly. "Given my station in life," says Garee, "I suspect that I will have even more requests pertaining to estate planning and probate, which is why I relocated my offices to the South Bay and Beach Cities."

Jean Batman's '88

 "Advising the Small Business: Forms and Advice for the Legal Practitioner," is an ABA Best Seller and she is currently working on the second edition. Jean also recently completed her first screenplay. Her son, James, will be attending UC Santa Cruz in September.

Julie Pearl '87 was named to Human Resource Executive magazine's list of the nation’s Top 10 Immigration Lawyers and Most Powerful Employment Attorneys.

Susan Bradley Krant '87 owns her own law practice with Carolyn Anderson '88 in Ashland, Oregon. Susan specializes in civil litigation, estate planning, and business formations, and Carolyn practices employment law and complex civil litigation. Susan writes, "My husband, Randy, played drums in the Twinkie Defense many times on the Beach but now practices dentistry in Yreka, California. We have two boys, Oliver (16) and Henry (13), and enjoy wakeboarding at Lake Shasta and skiing and snowboarding at Mt. Bachelor. Say hello if you visit Ashland for the Shakespeare Festival!"

Michael Schwartz '87 wrote Teaching Law by Design: Engaging Students from the Syllabus to the Final Exam and Contracts: A Context and Practice Casebook. Both books were published by Carolina Academic Press. Michael was named co-director of the Institute for Law Teaching and Learning.

Alan Abrahamson '87 cowrote No Limits: The Will to Succeed, with Olympic champion Michael Phelps. Alan is a columnist with NBCOlympics.com, NBCSports.com, and UniversalSports.com.

Tom Wingard '87 was appointed partner-in-charge of Alston & Bird's Los Angeles and Ventura County offices. He practices general corporate, securities, and business matters. Tom serves as outside general counsel for Dunbar Economic Development Corporation, a nonprofit focused on the economic revitalization of the Vernon-Central Corridor of South Los Angeles.

Lane Finch '87 is an attorney with Haskell Slaughter Young & Rediker, where he practices civil litigation. He was a featured speaker at the 9th Annual Insurance Coverage and Claims Institute, where he presented “Preparing the Insurance Professional for a Deposition.” He was also recognized as an Alabama Super Lawyer.

Vernon Winters '87 was selected by Chambers Global as one of the “Leading Lawyers” in California in the field of intellectual property, with a specialization in patent law. He writes, “My kids are (understandably) more excited that we got a dog.”

Jay Monahan '87 left eBay after over eight years to become general counsel of an online video start-up called Vuze. Jay writes, “My daughter, Ava Ireland, is now three and cute as ever! I am a member of the Hastings Board of Governors.”

Monica Lukoschek '87 was elected the president of The Orange County Hispanic Bar Association.

opened her own firm, Gruen Law, which provides legal services in the areas of construction, real estate, insurance, contracts, and personal injury law.

Suzanne Schiller '87 , a Spector Gadon & Rosen member, is an auxiliary member of the National Ski Patrol and a volunteer patroller at Jack Frost Mountain in the Poconos.  "I wanted to try something completely different, so I signed up to be a candidate for the patrol," Suzanne explained. To become a patrol member, candidates must take a three-month course in outdoor emergency care, and complete additional on-the-hill training every weekend during the ski season. Suzanne is also qualified as a First Responder in Pennsylvania, the basic level of emergency medical service practitioners.  "It's a new way to experience a sport that I love and to improve my skiing ability. I'm enjoying every minute of it," Suzanne says.  

David Vaughn '87 writes, "I lead the Global Risk and Investigations Practice in Los Angeles for an international litigation and business consulting firm. I assisted the receivers and trustees in the Bernard Madoff, R. Allen Stanford, and Marc Dreier Ponzi scheme cases, in addition to working on a highly-publicized theft of trade secrets case."

Eric Uhl '87 , of Fisher & Philips's Portland, Maine office, was named to "The Best Lawyers in America 2010" by his peers. 

Eric Wildgrube '87 says, "I remain happily married to my law school girlfriend, am the proud father of a senior at UC Santa Cruz and a U.S. Marine, and recently left private practice to accept an appointment as an Administrative Law Judge. Life is good!"

Victoria Powers '87 , a partner with Schottenstein Zox & Dunn's Columbus, Ohio office, was named to the  2010 edition of the Best Lawyers in America in the field of bankruptcy and creditor-debtor rights law.

Jeff Randall '87 is co-chair of Paul Hastings Janofsky & Walker's global intellectual property practice. He is based in the firm's Palo Alto and Washington, D.C., offices.

Lane Finch '87 was appointed program chair for the 2010 Insurance Coverage and Claims Institute. He is an attorney with Haskell Slaughter Young & Rediker, where he maintains a diversified civil litigation practice, with a focus on representing businesses in commercial litigation, insurance coverage issues, directors and officers liability, employment matters and intellectual property protection.

Beverly Narayan '87 says, "I recently became the managing attorney of Narayan & Hudson, the San Francisco Staff Legal Office of Zurich Insurance, North America. I'm married to a great guy who is stepfather to my two fantastic daughters-Sasha, a junior at Cal (go Bears!) and Kaiya, a junior at Burlingame High School."

Michael Brandt '87 's Seattle law firm, Brandt Law Group, will celebrate its 10th anniversary in January 2010.

Steve Elie '87 says, "After 22 years, I am still at Musick Peeler & Garrett representing clients in environmental matters and providing general business and litigation advice. I have thrown my hat in the ring for a political office, using my time as ASH President as a guiding experience, and am running for the Inland Empire Utilities Agency Board of Directors. It is a great way to couple my interest in serving the public with my environmental and water law experience.  Wish me luck!"

Barbara Snider '87 writes, "After practicing many years in San Francisco primarily with Cooper White & Cooper, two years ago I left to focus full time on our family business, Fortress Vineyards. We have been grapegrowers for over 20 years, but are now seriously in the wine business. Our wines are receiving high scores and reviews, which is gratifying."

is entering her fourth year of solo practice and her fourth year teaching Legal Writing and Research at Hastings. She says, "I am enjoying every minute of it!"

Carla Castillo '87

has practiced criminal appellate law in Berkeley for 15 years. She says, "In 2006, I represented an innocent client who, after winning a reversal in the court of appeal, obtained a factual finding of innocence and ultimately received a $1 million settlement from Santa Clara County. Due to my work on this case, I received the Gerald Z. Marer Award for panel excellence from the Sixth District Appellate Program."

Jay Monahan '87

has joined the San Francisco-based Zynga legal team as deputy general counsel, handling litigation, intellectual property, privacy and government relations.

Stephen Finestone '86 was named a Northern California Super Lawyer in the area of bankruptcy and creditor/debtor rights for the second time. He discussed bankruptcy on KGO-AM radio’s Gil Gross show.

Claire Cortner '86 , vice president and claim counsel for CNA Insurance Companies,  is responsible for a segment of the company’s law department claims division. She is based in San Francisco.

Sheila Purcell '86 founded and directs the San Mateo Court’s Multi-Option ADR Project, which received an award for innovation in state courts. She enjoys writing and teaching about ADR; has helped courts in Bosnia, India, Italy, and Slovenia develop ADR programs; and will be an adjunct of dispute system design at Hastings this fall. Sheila reconnected with her classmate Kevin Finnegan in New York, where he is the political director for a major union.

Lance Fujisaki '86 writes, “I started a law firm in Honolulu with eight attorneys specializing in community association law."

Jay Spillane '86 says, “I launched Spillane Weingarten, thus continuing my tradition of chairing a business litigation boutique. The firm has seven attorneys handling business cases, especially in media, entertainment, and intellectual property matters. I started this new venture when my former partners accepted an offer to become the Los Angeles office of an AmLaw 200 firm. I elected to remain stubbornly independent.”

Stacey Pratt '86 , of counsel with Littler Mendelson, litigates employment-related matters in a variety of forums, including state and federal courts at the trial and appellate levels and before administrative agencies.

Matthew Orebic '86 has been with the Berkeley City Attorney’s Office for the past 20 years, advising the police department, city manager, and council on issues involving civil rights, demonstrations, the homeless, and medical marijuana. He lives in Berkeley with his wife, Jane, and their children, Alex (10) and Anna (6).

Renee Richards '86 received an Award of Merit from The Bar Association of San Francisco for serving more than 20 years as a member of the Lawyer Referral and Information Service oversight committee, the last three of which she chaired.

Robert Rigsby '86 , a judge with the Washington, D.C., Superior Court, is on a six-month tour in the Middle East, overseeing military trials in Iraq and Kuwait.

Jess Yanez '86 's trial practice, Visse-Yanez handles business and personal injury litigation across California. The firm is located in San Francisco.

Thomas Zengel '86

is the principal at his East Bay business valuation and consulting firm, NorCal Business Valuations, serving the Bay Area and Northern California. Thomas writes, "We offer professional business valuation services to business owners, attorneys and other professionals for various purposes financings, estate and gift filings, succession and exit planning, corporate and partnership dissolution, buy and sell, and family limited partnerships."

Leslie Longenbaugh '86

is the part-time federal Magistrate Judge for Juneau, Alaska. She also advises and represents employers and other business clients through her private practice.

Lance Adair '85 is a business and real estate litigator with offices in the “Spectrum” area of Irvine. In 2003, he and a partner formed a firm, Adair & Fransz, which has four lawyers.

Debra Estrem '85 , a director at Deloitte Tax, Debra specializes in all types of IRS controversies. She is married with two children, and the oldest is a freshman at Cal Poly.

Michael McKone '85 was appointed by Allstate Insurance Company to lead its legal offices in Sacramento and San Jose. He is also a member of the American Board of Trial Advocates.

Lynette Kelly '85 writes, "I returned to the Bay Area last year after many years at Shearman & Sterling in New York. I am now a trial attorney with the U.S. Department of Justice, as part of the U.S. Trustee Program in Oakland."

Peter Engstrom '85 is the North American managing partner for Baker & McKenzie and sits on the firm's global Executive Committee. When not traveling, he is resident in the firm's San Francisco office.

Robert Phelps '85 graduated from the Screenwriting Master of Fine Arts Program at UCLA's School of Theater, Film and Television. He is negotiating an option agreement for a television series he created on criminal defense work. Robert previously served as the deputy public defender at the Santa Clara County Public and Alternate Defender Offices.

Richard Yanagi '85 was appointed a Chapter 7 panel trustee by the Office of the United States Trustee. A solo practitioner in commercial law, collections and landlord-tenant litigation, Richard is based in Honolulu.

Carol Powell '85

is on the Management Committee of Mullen & Filippi, a California firm specializing in workers compensation defense. She has been with this firm for 23 years and is a Certified Workers Compensation Specialist. Carol is also a pro tem judge with the Oakland Workers' Compensation Appeals Board. She and her husband of 23 years, Ted, have a 14-year-old son and reside in Walnut Creek.

writes, "After graduating from Hastings, I worked as a staff attorney at the Ninth Circuit and for the National Labor Relatios Board in San Francisco. In 1995, I returned to school and graduated from the University of Connecticut School of Medicine. I did my residency in psychiatry and psychoanalytic training at Emory. I now have my own psychiatric practice in Atlanta and enjoy consulting with attorneys on medical malpractice cases."

Curtis Kidder '85

is an Assistant City Attorney for the City of Los Angeles and serves as general counsel for the Community Redevelopment Agency of the City of Los Angeles. He previously served in several capacities for the Oakland City Attorney's Office. Curtis says, "I live in Pasadena, but look forward to returning to the Bay Area."

Lance Adair '85

has formed a new firm, Adair & Butler, which will concentrate in the areas of business and real estate litigation, and homebuilder counseling and representation. The firm is located in Irvine.

Robert Bustamante '84 is senior partner of a law firm that represents developers and general contractors in construction defect litigation and ongoing operations. "I have successfully defended clients on over 700 matters, and our firm celebrates its 15-year anniversary this fall," writes Robert. "My wife, Pam, and I have two boys, Robby and Jimmy, and a daughter, Danielle. Our oldest is a freshman at UC Santa Barbara and the other two attend Valley Christian High School in San Jose. I am a man of great faith and thank God every day for the opportunities I have enjoyed throughout my life."

Shawn Christianson '84 was elected president of The Hillsborough City School District Board of Trustees elected its president.

Dan Rose '84 runs a plaintiff's personal injury, wrongful death, and product liability practice, the Law Office of Daniel Rose, in San Francisco. He was previously a partner at Lieff Cabraser.

Kevin Mayer '84 was elected to the board of directors of The L.A. Chapter of the Association of Business Trial Lawyers. A partner in the Los Angeles firm Liner Grode, Kevin is cochair of the Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association’s Legal Task Force. He lobbied Congress on its behalf, in support of pending physical education legislation addressing the obesity epidemic that plagues youth and adult populations.

Jane Yee '84 is a partner in the San Francisco office of Foley & Mansfield, where she practices toxic tort and mass tort litigation.

Mark Hansen '84 , as of counsel at Seyfarth Shaw’s Los Angeles office, works in the estates and trusts practice group.

George Markell '84 writes, “I have retired from the practice of law after having surgery to remove a tumor from my brain. For the past seven years, I have worked from home in San Francisco as a contract lawyer in asbestos litigation, on the defense side.”

Chris Foster '84 is a shareholder in Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck’s Los Angeles office.

Rachelle Chong '84 is a Commissioner of the California Public Utilities Commission in San Francisco. She was appointed by Governor Schwarzenegger in January 2006. Given her prior service as a Commissioner of the Federal Communications Commission from 1994-1997, she says she is a "serial regulator". She spends much of her time working on broadband, smart grid, renewable energy, electric vehicles and telehealth matters.

Laurie Orange '84 writes, "I live in San Diego with my husband of 25 years and our two beautiful Russian Blue cats. Unfortunately, I am now disabled and retired from the practice of law. I spent 15 years as a litigator in private practice, in San Francisco and San Diego, then moved to the public sector for seven years at County Counsel, where I did enforcement work for the Air Pollution Control District. I was rear-ended six times and had three back and neck surgeries. I never recovered from the last one, and so I no longer work and stay at home."

Scott Tate '84 is a partner in the San Francisco office of Philadelphia-based Schnader Harrison. He says, "I practice commercial, business, products and construction litigation. I married a fellow Bronson litigator, Lauren, who is a UC Davis graduate. Our daughter, Clara, attends Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts. I planned on attending last year's reunion, but visited Clara for her birthday. I hope everyone enjoyed the reunion!"

is an environmental attorney and the managing partner for the San Francisco office of Sheppard Mullin Richter & Hampton. She says, "Dave and I spend our spare time traveling with children and grandchildren, most recently to Easter Island and Chile."

Dan Rose '84

specializes in representing bicyclists in personal injury litigation at the Law Office of Daniel H. Rose in San Francisco.

Paul Riehle '84 has been at Sedgwick since graduating. He specializes in complex commercial and tort litigation. Paul was recently appointed to the State Bar Antitrust & Unfair Competition Executive Committee. He is a founding board member of an international humaitarian nonprofit. Paul lives in San Francisco with his wife, Stephanie, high school sophomore son, Danny, and eighth grade daughter, Madison.

Jeffrey Blanck '84

says, "I am handling several civil rights discrimination claims in Nevada, California and Arizona. I also have several actions against various school districts in Nevada for Due Process violations as well as Special Education claims. I am getting a lot of inquiries from terminated employees, but most are at-will in Nevada and do not have any recourse. The recession has hit Nevada hard. Sharrone and I are doing well, and our boys are now 10 and 11."

Norma Formanek '83 is senior vice president of administration and general counsel at the Electric Power Research Institute, which conducts research and development for the global electricity sector. The nonprofit brings experts from academia and industry together with its scientists and engineers to address challenges in electricity generation, delivery, and use. “I live in San Mateo with my husband, Mark; son, Nick (15), and daughter, Julia (14); and the world’s most perfect dog, Kona,” says Norma.

Carol Malenka Collins '83 , a partner in Hanson Bridgett’s employee benefits practice group, advises employers on welfare plan issues, flexible benefits, dependent care, and severance and leave plans.

Jean Amabile '83 and her husband, Patrick Mattimore, live in Geneva, where she is the deputy director of International Bridges to Justice. She writes grant proposals for the organization and says, “The work is rewarding and challenging, but learning French has been daunting. Pat is busy writing op-eds and enjoying our new life.”

Patricia Dunn '83 says, “I moved to Ireland last year after retiring as assistant city attorney for Ithaca. I have been reading novels, walking in the mountains, and enjoying the beauty of the country.”

Nancy Lee '83 was elected chairperson of Sierra Health Foundation’s nine-member board of directors. She is a shareholder in the business services practice group of McDonough Holland & Allen’s Sacramento office.

James Riddle '83 , a partner in Holland & Knight’s San Francisco office, practices in the litigation group.

Donald Vaughn '83 and his wife, Kathryn, are lead partners at Vaughn & Vaughn, based in San Diego. They volunteer with a nonprofit they helped found, called Just in Time for Foster Youth. The organization helps young adults who struggle to get on their feet after “aging out” of the foster care system when they turn 18.

Winston Peters '83 , the Assistant Los Angeles County Public Defender, received the Livingston Hall Juvenile Justice Award from the American Bar Association for his advocacy and commitment to children in the field of juvenile justice. He is also a member of the MacArthur Foundation’s Juvenile Indigent Defense Action Network in California.

Kate Rundle '83

is the executive vice president and general counsel of Oclaro, a Nasdaq-traded company that makes lasers and related components for telecommunications and other industries. Oclaro is her second public company as a general counsel.

 

Mark Okey '83

is a Senior Director & Senior Corporate Counsel specializing in employment matters for Ingram Micro, a global distributer of computer products and services. Mark lives in Newport Beach with his wife, Stephanie, and their two children, Chris and Paige.

Rachel Ullman '83

writes, "I’ve been out of touch with most of you, so here is a brief summary of what I’ve been up to. In 1983, I married Dan Ullman, a mathematician from UC Berkeley. I then started working as the deputy city attorney of Merced, California. In 1985, Dan and I moved to Maryland and he became a faculty member with George Washington University. We have three children: Sandy, a first-year at Harvard Law School; Jessie, a senior at Oberlin College and Conservatory; and Bobby, a high school junior at the Montgomery Blair magnet school. I am now an immigration attorney with an office in Silver Spring, Maryland. I would love to hear from any of my friends from Hastings!"

Patrick Mattimore '83

writes, "My wife, Jean Amabile '83, and I moved to Beijing, China from France about six months ago. I am an adjunct professor at Xinghua University teaching LLM students through a program sponsored by Temple University. I also write frequently for English language newspapers here. Jean is China Director of International Bridges to Justice, a group that is trying to bring the rule-of-law to China."

Patrick Mattimore '83

says, "I will be teaching an LLM program at Tsinghua University and am writing for several Communist newspapers. My wife, Jean Amabile '83, is China Director of International Bridges to Justice, working to train lawyers to defend the accused."

Ted Zayner '83

was appointed by Governor Schwarzenegger to the Superior Court bench in Santa Clara County in 2009. He is currently presiding over a misdemeanor calendar in the Palo Alto courthouse. Ted says, "With the appointment of Julie Emede '95 at the same time, all the judges in the Palo Alto courthouse are now Hastings alums!"

Michael McNamara '82 is a partner in the Century City office of Steptoe & Johnson. “After leading the trial practice at McNamara Spira & Smith for 16 years, I look forward to helping Steptoe grow its national trial practice,” he says.

Tom Huffaker '82 was appointed as vice president of policy and environment for The Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers.

Linda Weissinger Russell '82 writes, “Hard to believe we graduated from Hastings in 1982! I still live in San Francisco with my husband of 20 years, who is also a lawyer, and our two daughters, ages 18 and 15. I am director of product development of the Continuing Education of the Bar in Oakland, where I oversee the publication of practice guides for California lawyers. I hope everyone is well!”

Robert Kaneda '82 says, “I am enjoying life in Paris, where I work in the political section of the U.S. Embassy.”

Liz Tarchi '82 has been a criminal prosecutor in the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office for 23 years and recently prosecuted a high-profile domestic violence homicide, securing a second-degree murder verdict. Liz writes, “I was honored with the Vagina Warrior Award by the Filipina Women’s Network in commendation of my work in the field of domestic violence prosecution. I live in San Francisco with my husband of 25 years and two children. The oldest is a freshman at Emerson College in Boston. My son is a sophomore in the bilingual baccalaureate program at International High School.”

Julie Tang '82 says, “I am in my 18th year as a San Francisco judge. Judge Lillian Sing ’75 and I traveled to China to lecture on judging and the law for judges in Shanghai and Nanjing, and law students at Beijing University. My son is in his second year at Illinois College of Optometry.”

Kevin Takeuchi '82 and his wife, Tomomi, have a daughter named Mika.

Nelson Keith Brooks '82 was appointed by Governor Schwarzenegger to a judgeship in the El Dorado County Superior Court.

E. F. Cash-Dudley '82 is a certified family law specialist and received her license to practice in Hawaii last year. She plans to practice family law when she retires from practice in Modesto.

Laurence Brown '82 writes, "I am truly having fun again, consulting on issues I find interesting."

Carol Peterson Hennekens '82

writes, "My paper pushing path is currently in round three of the small business ownership phase. My husband and I were named the U.S. 'Dealer of the Year' for Arctic Spas, a Canadian-based hot tub manufacturer, for the second time in three years. I'm also caring for my 88-year-old mom, fighting Fibromyalgia, and am active in my Unitarian Universalist Church and the local Democratic Party, which is very interesting given that I live in one of the most conservative counties in the U.S."

 

Allen Bromberger '82 lives and practices law in New York City. He says, "After many years as a public interest lawyer, I joined a small firm as partner. My practice has grown steadily for the past five years and focuses on businesses with a social mission. I represent entrepreneurs involved in organic and natural consumer goods, development of alternative energy, climate mitigation, health care and biotechnology, and community investing. I am happily married to a wonderful woman who is not a lawyer, and we have two girls, ages six and four."

Noel Edlin '82 is the managing partner of Bassi Edlin Huie & Blum, a 28-attorney law firm with offices in downtown San Francisco and Los Angeles. Noel continues to litigate and try environmental and product defect cases.

Alexandra Volkerts '82 is a senior disability rights lawyer and a supervising attorney for the special education unit at Disability Rights Montana, working to obtain special education services and supports for students with disabilities. She also obtains appropriate community treatment for children with autism, developmental disabilities and serious emotional disturbance through Medicaid and other government-sponsored health insurance programs. Alexandra says, "During the last 12 years, I have taken a half-dozen cases to the Montana Supreme Court in the areas of guardianship, commitment standards, financial abuse and other matters."  

Nathan Sult '82 and Beth Tarter, friends since high school, married each other in Honolulu. "When we aren't being Boy Scout leaders or parenting our Corgi, Charlie, I am senior vice president and legal division manager for Bank of Hawaii, and Beth is the Equal Employment Office and Americans with Disabilities Officer for the Hawaii Judiciary," Nathan says. 

Michael Ornstil '82 has been a mediator and arbitrator with JAMS for 15 years. He says, "I am one of the owners of JAMS and serve on the IRS Board of Directors. For fun, I coach youth competitive soccer teams and just completed my term as president of the Bay Oaks Soccer Club."

joined Lovitt & Hannan, a boutique firm practicing complex litigation for both plaintiffs and defendants, after the dissolution of Heller Ehrman. Jonathan says, "I also served as one of the four members of Heller Ehrman's dissolution Committee, sheparding the former international law firm through a dissolution and bankruptcy process which is finally winding down."

Alexandra Volkerts '82

says, "After 16 years in private practice specializing in business, banking and real estate law in San Francisco and London, I followed my dream and am now doing disability law in Montana, which is the reason I went to law school after getting a masters in social work. As a senior attorney with Disability Rights Montana, I have won Montana Supreme Court cases establishing essential rights for people with disabilities and developed legislation supporting those rights."

Betty Richardson '82

received the Outstanding Service Award from the Idaho State Bar and was named an Idaho Woman of the Year for 2010 by the Idaho Business Review.

Sukum Sai-Ngarm '81 says, “Besides practicing general litigation and immigration law, I coach soccer at the local high school, where my sons played. There is nothing like leaving the office by 2 p.m. to coach soccer. As a Thai-American attorney, I have represented Buddhist temples on issues like land use, immigration, and religion. Recently, I attended a meeting of oversea Thais regarding the political problems in Thailand, and we issued a statement of our hopes for a peaceful political process to the Thai press.”

Deb Volberg Pagnotta '81 celebrated the 10th anniversary of her business, Interfacet, which provides on-site trainings on workplace issues and eLearning products. She adds, “Life is good!”

John Rumel '81 , as general counsel for the Idaho Education Association, advises and handles administrative hearings, litigation, and appeals for the Idaho state teachers union, its local associations, and members. He is an adjunct professor at the University of Idaho College of Law, teaching workplace and education law.

Debra Fink Bogaards '81 was named a Northern California Super Lawyer for the fourth consecutive year and sits on the Hastings 1066 Foundation Board of Trustees and the board of directors for Legal Aid of Marin. Her eldest daughter, Jamie, is a senior at the University of Oregon, and Danielle is a junior at UC Berkeley. Debra and her husband, Pieter, celebrated their 26th anniversary in Holland, where they were married. She and her law partner, Bob Pave, are entering their 15th year in practice at Pave & Bogaards. In her free time, Debra enjoys trips to the gym and walking her dog.

Lawrence Levine '81 , bicoastal for the past six years, teaches at New York Law School during the fall semester and at the University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law in the spring. He teaches torts, sexual orientation and the law, and bioethics. He plans to spend a few months in Buenos Aires for his spring 2010 sabbatical and welcomes any legal contacts or tips about the city.

Debra Fink Bogaards '81 writes, "I am thrilled to be a new member of the Hastings 1066 Foundation Board; it's a sheer delight to reconnect with so many alumni. As managing partner of Pave & Bogaards, a San Francisco law firm of five trial lawyers, I practice in the areas of personal injury, elder abuse, American Disabilities Act-related issues, and neighbor disputes. In my free time, I still enjoy rowing in a single shell with the Open Water Rowing Center under the Golden Gate Bridge. This year, my husband, Pieter, and I celebrated our 25th anniversary in Holland."

Richard Newman '81 was appointed as Presiding Workers' Compensation Judge in the San Francisco district office of the Workers' Compensation Appeals Board.

Debra Bogaards '81

, trustee of the Hastings 1066 Foundation, co-hosted a 1066 alumni event featuring Professor Clark Freshman, a consultant to the popular television show, Lie to Me. Alumni learned about neurolinguistics and how to read involuntary facial expressions, which will be quite useful during settlement negotiations. Debra reports that it was a wonderful connection with Hastings, and an
opportunity to reconnect with classmates.

Larry Levine '81

writes, "I had the good fortune to spend March and April on sabbatical in Buenos Aires. While there, I delivered a lecture on the struggle for marriage equality at the University of Buenos Aires and a lecture about the U.S. tort system for the Buenos Aires Bar Association. More importantly, I ate a lot of amazing steak and drank more than my share of excellent Malbec." Larry will teach at New York Law School this summer.

Janet Ballou '81

is a senior staff counsel at the State Department of Child Support Services. She writes, "After 25 years of state service, I am beginning to contemplate retirement. I hope to use my legal education and experience in new ways in the future."

Patricia Cooper '81

is the executive director of the Good Knight Child Empowerment Network. She is obtaining her Master's Degree in Special Education and Elementary Education and is teaching special education in Prince George's County Public Schools. She lives in Maryland with her 13-year-old daughter and three-year-old Border Collie.

writes, "I have been producing on- and off-Broadway (All About Me and Enron on-Broadway this year, Back to Bacharach and David off-Broadway last year), freelance consulting in Australia, the Middle East and the UK, and hosting benefit concerts to support the California Music Project."

Bill Coats '80 is an intellectual property litigation partner with White & Case in Palo Alto. His band, Kevin Maney and his Briefs, released its first CD. John Given ’99 is the band’s lead guitarist and is in-house at Digidesign, which manufactures the editing software ProTools.

Rod Thompson '80 was named among the Top 75 Intellectual Property Litigators in California by The Daily Journal. Rod is a partner in Farella Braun + Martel’s San Francisco office.

John Lande '80 was named the Isidor Loeb Professor at the University of Missouri Law School.

Roger Dreyer '80 was recognized by The Best Lawyers in America as the “Sacramento Lawyer of the Year” in the field of personal injury litigation.

Michael Fish '80 was reappointed to serve on the State Bar Mandatory Fee Arbitration Committee and presented on mandatory fee arbitration at the annual State Bar Convention. Michael led a Rotaplast medical team to Egypt in June to provide free cleft palate and cleft lip surgery on over 100 indigent children.

Thomas Campbell '80 was appointed to the board of directors of The Arizona Technology Council. He is a partner in Lewis & Roca’s Phoenix office, where his practice is concentrated in the areas of regulatory and administrative law.

Rose-Eve Lewis '80 says, “I have been in solo practice in Carmel Valley for the last 10 years and now divide my time between the Valley and my apartment in Paris. My daughter, Genevieve, is a governmental affairs lawyer at Apple, and Anne-Marie is in her last year of veterinary medicine and is doing clinical work at Texas A&M. I still ride my horse and try to compete when I can. I recently had dinner with Jackie Jauregui and exchange e-mails with Joe Mascovich.”

Amy Wind '80 was appointed chief circuit mediator for the U.S. Courts of the District of Columbia Circuit. She manages 160 volunteer attorney-mediators on cases ranging from single-plaintiff/single-defendant cases to class actions, regulatory cases, constitutional challenges, and agency petitions for review. She writes, “So far, my new job at the courthouse has been engaging and downright fun.”

Ben Davidian '80 was appointed by Governor Schwarzenegger to the Superior Court for Sacramento County. Ben was sworn in by fellow alum Marvin Baxter ’66.

Werner Lewin '80 runs the Bay Area-based attorney placement service, Attorney Assistance, which was selected the 2008 “Best Service of its Kind” by Bay Area law offices in a survey conducted by the Recorder.

Michael Schley '80 celebrated 15 years since the founding of his private practice in Santa Barbara, now Schley Look Guthrie & Locker. He works in financial, corporate and tax exempt law. He and his wife, Nancy Rogers, are expecting their second son in February.

Mark Gearheart '80 continues to represent injured workers in the Bay Area and serves on the Board of Directors of the California Applicant's Attorneys Association. He was named a Northern California Super Lawyer for the sixth consecutive year. Mark also teaches Legal Specialization and MCLE classes in workers' compensation law.

Santiago Fernandez '80 received the Association of Media and Entertainment Counsel's "Sports Counsel Award." He is the senior vice president and general counsel of the Los Angeles Dodgers,

Bradley Levin '80 , a shareholder in the Denver-based insurance recovery law firm Roberts Levin Rosenberg, was named to the 2010 edition of The Best Lawyers in America for his work in insurance law, bad faith, appellate law, personal injury and plaintiff’s litigation. 

Joseph Babich '80 writes, "I'm proud to announce that my partner Roger Dreyer obtained a verdict in the amount of $16,577,118 on behalf of the heirs of Jennifer Strange in the Sacramento County Superior Court case of Strange v. Entercom Sacramento. Ms. Strange died of water intoxication following her participation in a promotional water drinking contest sponsored by a local radio station. After four weeks of trial and eight days of deliberation, the jury reached its verdict on October 29, 2009."

Alan Schulkin '80 says, "I have had a solo banking law practice since leaving Bank of America 11 years ago. I am the 2010 chairman of the board of trustees for the Puget Sound Blood Center, a leading research institution in addition to its primary role as the blood and tissue bank for Western Washington. I swam 2.5 miles across Lake Washington as part of a fundraiser for the Blood Center that attracted 250 swimmers. I'm also thrilled to still be around nine years after cancer treatments."

Pamela Roberts '80 is a partner in Bowman and Brooke's Columbia, South Carolina office, where her practice includes complex business and securities litigation, class action defense, and pharmaceutical and product liability defense. Pamela is a delegate to the American Bar Association's House of Delegates and a member on the association's Litigation Section's council. 

 

Poli Flores '80

was appointed to the Superior Court of Imperial County last December. He is currently assigned to family law and domestic violence cases. Poli says, "This appointment is truly an honor for me and my family." He has been married to Mercy, a teacher, for 24 years, and has three children: Ana-Mercedes, a senior at UCSD; Carlos, a senior in high school; and Selina, a high school sophomore.

Rod Thompson '80

, a partner with Farella Braun + Martel, was elected president of Legal Community Against Violence's Board of Directors. The organization is a national public interest law center dedicated to preventing gun violence through legislation, litigation and education. Rod is a member of Farella’s Advisory Board and its Intellectual Property Litigation Department. His law practice emphasizes complex commercial litigation, including intellectual property and antitrust cases.

Kester So '80

is part of Dickinson Wright's management group, where he is responsible for the leadership and coordination of the firm's eight practice departments. Working in the firm's Lansing, Michigan office, Kester's practice focuses on public finance, economic development projects, and energy law. 

Lynne Segal '80

is serving her third term on the Board of Directors of the Golden Gate Bridge, Highway, and Transportation District. In 2009, she became a certified yoga instructor. Lynne says, "My children and grandchildren live in Northern California near my husband and me. We are very appreciative of our good life."

Paul Goldsmith '80

writes, "I have restarted my photography career, and have mounted a show of "Prague 1968" photographs at the Commonwealth Club. I have also had several pictures acquired by The Chicago Art Institute and the Museum of Fine Arts at Houston."

recently moved his appellate practice to Miller Law Group in San Francisco. He is a State Bar certified specialist in Appellate Law and a member of the California Academy of Appellate Lawyers.
