A new book chronicles the evolution of civil liberties in California

Wherever There’s a Fight, by Elaine Elinson and Stan Yogi, tells the story of freedom and equality in California, from the Gold Rush to the precarious post–9/11 era. By relating the experiences of early Chinese immigrants subjected to discriminatory laws to professionals who challenged McCarthyism, the book chronicles hidden stories of brave individuals who stood up for their rights in the face of social hostility, physical violence, economic hardship, and political stonewalling.

Elinson and Yogi contend that the Constitution outlines civil liberties and rights, but people can transform those ideals into practical realities by challenging prejudice and discrimination.

Elinson is a media consultant for UC Hastings and was previously the communications director of the ACLU of Northern California.
