Reunion Chair Pat Meyers '90 on the importance of giving back

Overall Reunion Chair Pat Meyers '90

As an owner, managing director and the top lawyer at Consumer Capital Partners, the parent company to sandwich chain giant Quiznos, Pat Meyers '90 has a lot on his plate.  However, with his grit and passion for giving back, Meyers has decided to take on the challenge of chairing this year’s reunion, which celebrates the classes of 1960 – 2005.

As the law school's ambassador for the ten reunion classes' fundraising campaign, the overall chair provides a leadership gift, inspiring others to give back in honor of their reunion.  It is one of the most important roles an alum can play, and Meyers plays the part with exemplary leadership.

A Colorado native, Meyers returned to Denver upon graduating from Hastings.  He clerked for Justice William Erickson of the Colorado Supreme Court, and thereafter was an attorney with Moyes Giles in Denver, specializing in franchise, appellate and transactional law.  While at Moyes Giles, Meyers was also appointed as a Special Assistant Attorney General for criminal appeals for three years.

In 1993, Quiznos appointed Meyers a director of the company, and four years later, he spearheaded its first general counsel’s office, subsequently becoming a minority owner.  Meyers has now done it all, for at various times he has served as the head of legal, finance, administration, IT and human resources for the company.  Still a minority owner in Quiznos, he presently serves as the chief legal officer of its parent company, Consumer Capital Partners.

Meyers has many philanthropic endeavors, such as managing the Meyers Family Foundation and mentoring students at Cornell’s School of Hotel Administration.  A trustee for the Hastings 1066 Foundation, he also serves on the advisory board of The Pillsbury Institute for Hospitality Entrepreneurship.

On leading the reunion campaign…

Those of us who attended Hastings had opportunities many people do not have—law school helped build a foundation that has been fundamental in the successes I've had over the years.

Particularly when state funding is at an all-time low, I felt I had a duty to send a message to my fellow alumni that students today deserve the same opportunities we had, and that we have a responsibility to help provide that opportunity through an increased level of giving back to the school.

On what Hastings taught him…

Besides the academics, which are exceptional, Hastings instills a sense of pride and ethics.  Much of this is due to the law school's amazing location in San Francisco in the heart of the legal community, the range and background of terrific professors, and the large student body—diverse interests are represented at Hastings, so you learn a lot just from the day-to-day interaction with faculty and classmates.

On what he looks forward to at the reunion…

Reconnecting with old friends, receiving an update on the school, the possibility of connecting with new students, and seeing the changes that have taken place since I was at Hastings.

On the importance of giving back…

We tend to get so involved in our own worlds that we forget how much Hastings means to us.  It's important to contribute what you can.  If a large percentage of each class gives even modest amounts, imagine what an astounding difference we could make for the law school.

Reunion Weekend is October 1 and 2, 2010.  Visit www.uchastings.edu/reunion for information on events and registration.
